Laurel homes and their roofs
Laurel's median home was built in 1985, and about three in ten are townhouses. The city's history runs much deeper: it began as "Laurel Factory", was renamed in 1875, and a few mill houses survive at the west end of Main Street. That mix means a Laurel roof can be anything from a 19th-century cottage to a 2010s townhouse.
City of Laurel permit rules
The City of Laurel issues its own permits through the Department of the Fire Marshal and Permit Services. Its building code says roofing does not need a permit provided no construction is involved. Replacement roof sheeting with fire-retardant-treated (FRT) material does require a permit; the city's townhouse page says replacement sheeting must be fire-resistant treated. Inside the City of Laurel Historic District, roofing work needs Historic District Commission approval.
Weather and Laurel roofs
About 10% of Laurel lies in the Patuxent River floodplain, and NOAA recorded flash flooding in 2022 and 2025, including 3-foot-deep water on US 1. Heavy rain finds weak points in roofs and gutters too. Good drainage, sound flashing and clear gutters are the first line of defense.
How a Laurel roof project works with us
It starts with a free inspection at your address. We look at the shingles, flashing, drainage and accessible ventilation, then give you a written estimate. Maryland requires home improvement contracts to be in writing and to show the contractor's license number; ours is MHIC #164924. You also have 3 business days after signing to cancel in writing.
